The guys at Mantrap asked me to create a poster for an exibition in Paris. The only brief was to create a typographic poster based on a quote from a hip-hop track. I chose this track from the Beastie Boys. It was then riso printed with two colors, blue and neon pink.
The concept was to illustrate the duality of the track and the play on words : something quite strong and violent (neon pink) opposing something light and fun (blue).
I tried to take full advantage of the particular grain you get with the risograph printing technique, by using a lot a gradients and textured strokes. The pink part was created in Illustrator while the blue elements were created in Photoshop with a pen tablet.
Neon colors are hard to render with a photo, pink is actualy way more bright.
You can buy it right here.

Below are the early sketches and the originaly planed colors. I always start working with very rough and quick drawings, just to define the overall compostion. They are done very quikly, allowing to test many different options, and to chose the right one before going any further.
